In the first reaction from Sri Lanka’s political leadership after the Indian government ended Jammu and Kashmir’s special status , the country’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said Ladakh would become “the first Indian State with a Buddhist majority.” Refraining from commenting on the move itself, he called it “India’s internal matter”.

“I understand Ladakh will finally become a Union Territory. With 70% of Ladakh’s population being Buddhist, it will be the first Indian State with a Buddhist majority. Creation of Ladakh and consequential restructuring is India’s internal matter, it is a beautiful region well worth a visit,” he tweeted on Tuesday afternoon. Even though Mr. Wickremesinghe calls Ladakh a State, it will be a Union Territory without legislature.
