Mumbai: A 35-year-old man was killed and two of his family members were injured after a 30-foot compound wall collapsed on their house in Thane on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at 12.10 am at Patlipada on Ghodbunder Road. Local residents said Prakash Wahule (35) was sleeping in his house along with his family of six when the wall came crashing down, causing his house to partially cave in.

The sound of the collapse woke up other residents. “We immediately called the police control room and other authorities, including the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and the fire brigade. A police team reached the spot in half an hour,” Ghanshyam yadav, a neighbour, who was involved in the rescue operation, said.

Prakash, along with his wife Bharti (29) and son Samay (10), were taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa, where Prakash was declared dead before admission. The other three members of the family — their daughter Pranali and relatives Sharad and Kavita Paikrao — escaped with minor injuries.

Locals said Prakash, a carpenter, had moved into the locality from his native Yavatmal around a month ago, and was staying on rent.

The TMC vacated five other houses in the colony, and demolished the remnants of the compound wall. The debris was being cleaned till late on Tuesday night.

Ms. Bharti was discharged from the hospital at 3.45 p.m., and left for their native place with Prakash’s mortal remains.

TMC spokesperson Sandip Malvi said, “We are conducting inquiries to find out how old the wall was, and whether any notices were issued, or any other action was taken in the area previously. Future course of action will be decided based on the results of the inquiry.”
