Mumbai: The city received heavy rain on Tuesday, leading to waterlogging in chronic flooding spots like Hindmata, King’s circle, and Gandhi Market.

Around 11 a.m., the fire brigade received the call of a youth drowning in Shastri Nagar nullah no. 3 near the BKC. Rescue teams were sent to the spot but the youth could not be found.

“Nobody has been reported missing. Only one person had seen him going into the sea. Even CCTV cameras have not recorded any incident of drowning. We undertook search operations until 3 p.m. after which we called them off. We have asked locals to alert us if they find a body. It is also possible that the person could have managed to save himself,” a fire officer said.

There were 13 incidents of slab collapse across the city, but nobody was reported injured.

Meanwhile, a fire broke out at Kamala Mills’s trade building around 10 a.m., but it was immediately doused. The fire reportedly caused by a short circuit.

Till 8.30 a.m., India Meteorological Department’s Santacruz observatory had received 131.4 mm rain, while Colaba recorded 75.2 mm. It continued to rain throughout the day with respite only after 4 p.m. Until 8.30 p.m., Santacruz recorded 98.3 mm rain, while Colaba received 45.4 mm rain.

On the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) automated weather stations, Malad (west) recorded the highest (97.2 mm) followed by Chembur (96.8 mm) up to 5.30 p.m. Kurla received 208 mm rain from 7 p.m. on Monday to 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Hindmata remained waterlogged for at least three hours with traffic being diverted over the flyover. The other areas that saw flooding include Andheri subway, Parel TT, Shindewadi, Bhoiwada, Parel, Dharavi, Chunabhatti, Chembur, Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Sakinaka, Chincholi road, Dindoshi road, New Link road, Malad, and Jogeshwari.

The BMC used 37 pumps of its six pumping stations apart from 177 local pumps. “All the pumps were in working condition. There were no complaints. Five of the six pumps at Irla station were put to use,” an officer in the storm water drain department said.

The civic body was quick to claim credit for draining water from tracks between Sion and Kurla, saying five high-powered pumps were pressed into service by the BMC and the Railways.

Similar weather for 2 days

The IMD has forecast similar weather conditions for the next two days. The weatherman had announced last week that monsoon had covered the entire State. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad on Wednesday and Thursday.

Private weather forecasting agency Skymet has predicted ‘on and off heavy rain’ for Mumbai until July 7.
