The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Tuesday summoned Uber officials for examination and directed the United States-based company to get its act together if it wanted to continue operations in Delhi.
DCW chairperson Barkha Singh said the company’s representatives were issued an ultimatum to do so at the earliest and the Commission was in the process of initiating a programme to encourage more female drivers to get behind the wheels of cabs operating in Delhi-NCR.
“The company has been told to get all necessary licences and institute background checks for its drivers if it wants to continue operations in Delhi. We will hold meetings with representatives of cab companies, the Transport Department and the police to ensure women’s safety,” Ms. Singh told The Hindu .
“The idea is to get all stakeholders on board and formulating guidelines that will make safety of female passengers the paramount concern for all.”
The DCW, Ms. Singh said, was also in the process of formulating a scheme to get cab operators to hire more women drivers.
