Facing an onslaught of criticism after a woman who hired a cab using its app was raped allegedly by the driver, Internet-based taxi firm Uber apologised on Thursday and said it would tighten background checks.
A Delhi court, meanwhile, remanded the driver Shiv Kumar Yadav in judicial custody till December 24. As investigations by the Delhi Police continued, Nidhi Shah, the U.S.-based woman who had tweeted about Yadav’s indecent behaviour on November 26 when she took his cab during her India visit, responded to Delhi Police’s suggestion that she file a complaint.
In a related development, an agent of a finance company, who was suspected to have helped Yadav procure the fake character certificate which he submitted to the RTO to get an All-India Tourist Permit, was detained by the police.
