Every New Year comes with a new set of fitness and weight-loss goals for most of us. If you are running out of ways to achieve those goals, here is a new and fun way to get there.

PedalBeat is a brand new spin studio (indoor cycling) for fitness enthusiasts of Coimbatore. It is looked upon as a fun and efficient way to get fit and also burn a considerable amount of calories.

Situated in Red Fields, this small studio offers classes in the mornings and evenings, Monday through Saturday. At the beginning of the session, a trainer helps set up the stationery bike according to individual body geometry. Then a 45-minute workout session begins with an instructor guiding you along the way. Even those who never learnt to cycle in their lives can ride and benefit from spin cycling.

Fast trendy music is played in the background to keep the energy levels up and racing. A video of professional cyclists riding in scenic locations around the world is played too. The speed, cadence and other statistics are displayed on the bikes and the resistance is controlled using a small knob. A temperature controlled environment is maintained keeping comfort and fitness goals in mind. Small groups of nine individuals’ workout together, at a time.

Using state-of-the-art technology and heart rate monitors worn on wrists, the instructor monitors the heart rate of the individuals cycling in the group. Based on individual fitness levels and group goals, the riding intervals are administered systematically during the workout session. The intervals include timed sprints, hill climbs, tabata intervals, jumps and hovers interspersed with short periods of active rest, all of them designed to achieve maximum calorie burn. At the end of each session, an email is sent out with the detailed workout summary, so that one can analyse and improve upon.

Spin cycling as an exercise is particularly suitable to those who have busy work schedules, as each session requires only 45 minutes. Within these 45minutes, the warm up, stretches and cool down is also incorporated. It is also the ideal form of exercise to those who get motivated in a group. Just watching your heart rate on the TV screen alongside your friend’s or another rider’s is enough to stay motivated and keep pedalling. It also provides good cross-training to individuals already practising other forms of cardio like running, cycling or other high-intensity sports.

The team behind PedaBeat recommends spin cycling to those looking to control diabetes and to people looking for a low-impact to no-impact exercise. The trainers have been hand-picked from a pool of well qualified fitness instructors who can handle folks across all fitness levels.

For a more challenging workout, try out classes led by Deepak Samuel, an amatuer cycling champion who is well known in the local circuit. Trail classes are available on request, to those who are interested in giving spin cycling a try.

Various categories of memberships are on offer to those who are looking to sign up, with special discounts for senior citizens and students.

All you need are your regular gym clothes, a pair of sneakers, a water bottle and a little enthusiasm. Pedal away to a fitter and healthier you, in a fun way…
