The Election Commission on Friday announced that the counting of votes for the Mizoram Assembly election would take place on December 4, instead of December 3.

The commission, in a statement, said it had received several representations from various quarters requesting for a change in the date of counting from December 3 to some other week day on the ground that Sunday holds a special significance for the people of Mizoram. Church programmes are held on Sunday.

The counting of votes in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh, which had also gone to the polls between November 7 and 30, would take place on Sunday, as announced earlier.

Earlier in the day, the NGO Coordination Committee in Mizoram had urged political parties to keep their offices shut and not to send their representatives and candidates to counting centres on December 3 as a mark of protest.

The organisation, which is a conglomerate of several civil society and students’ organisations, had also passed a resolution to this effect. “We strongly condemn the fact that the Election Commission of India has scheduled the date of counting of votes for the Mizoram Assembly Elections 2023 on December 3, 2023 which falls on Sunday, a day of veneration for the Mizo Christian people,” it said.
