General Motors on Monday announced recall of 1.55 lakh vehicles in India, its largest such exercise in the country, to fix problems related to a remote keyless entry accessory that allows opening of cars without a mechanical key.

The recall will affect models, including Chevrolet Spark, Beat and Enjoy, manufactured between 2007 and 2014.

The American car maker, in 2013, had on two separate occasions recalled 1.14 lakh units of its multi-purpose vehicle Chevrolet Tavera to address emissions and specification issues and 4,000 units of the diesel variant of Sail model to address a potential engine issue.

“General Motors India is voluntarily recalling 155,000 units of Chevrolet Spark, Beat and Enjoy manufactured between 2007 and 2014 to address a potential safety recall for a remote keyless entry accessory issue,” the company said in a statement.

This is the second biggest recall of vehicles in India, biggest being the recall of 1.66 lakh cars by Ford to rectify problems related to steering and rear suspension in 2013.

“The remote keyless entry accessory meets all the relevant regulatory standards; however, GM India has been made aware of some isolated cases where certain Chevrolet Spark, Beat and Enjoy vehicles were fitted with a faulty accessory. As a result, the impacted models could experience damage to the vehicle due to inappropriate routing,” the company explained.

GM India said it will contact all affected customers to correct the fitting of the remote keyless entry accessory free of charge. It further requested customers who have concerns regarding the performance of their remote keyless entry accessory to visit their nearest Chevrolet dealer for a free inspection.

General Motor’s sells Beat, Captiva, Cruze, Enjoy, Sail, Sail Hatchback, Spark and Tavera models in India under Chevrolet brand.
