The Bengal Government [in Calcutta on October 22] has issued a Communique in regard to the rise in prices of dhotis and other cotton cloths. The Communique says: In this connection the Governor-in-Council received memorials signed by the inhabitants from various parts of the province and his attention has also been drawn to the articles appearing in the daily press in which the cause of increase in the price of dhotis has been attributed to the deliberate holding up of stocks on the part of wholesale dealers whose main object is to obtain higher profits. His Excellency in Council has made enquiries into the matter and is satisfied that there is no adequate evidence of improper withholding of stocks in the hopes of illegitimate gains.
