Unbeaten and leaders Khalsa Warriors will meet Punjab Thunder in the opening match of the Punjab leg of the inaugural Wave World Kabaddi League (WKL) in Ludhiana on Saturday, as the franchise-based event makes its maiden foray in its traditional homeland.
The WKL will arrive in Punjab after four successful weekends in three different cities and across two continents.
The WKL, which literally made waves in London, Birmingham and Delhi, in the first 16 matches over four weekends, will now seek to enthral fans in the ‘Home of Kabaddi’
The first four weekends in Punjab will feature four matches with all eight teams in action and setting the tone for a thrilling weekend will be Khalsa Warriors seeking to extend their winning streak to five after having won all its four previous games.
The opening match of the Punjab leg here will be held in Ludhiana’s Prithipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium at Punjab Agricultural University.
Prior to the two weekends in Delhi, the WKL was inaugurated in London’s O2 Arena and the second weekend saw matches in LG Arena in Birmingham, UK.
WKL matches will be played in four cities of Punjab, namely, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Jalandar and Amritsar.
The WKL matches are broadcasted on Sony Six, the official broadcasting partner for the league in India.
Speaking on the occasion, former India hockey captain Pargat Singh, who is aslo the commissioner of WKL said: “We are pleased to start the Punjab leg of Wave WKL. Wave WKL is a huge platform for kabaddi talent across the globe. All our teams are also very excited and looking forward to playing in Punjab.
“After receiving overwhelming response in United Kingdom and New Delhi, we are bringing the game to the home ground, Punjab. The matches played during last four weekends saw intense action. We hope to recreate the kabaddi magic in Punjab.”
WKL CEO Raman Raheja added: “After completing four weeks, we have been successfully able to establish Wave WKL as an international sports brand. We received excellent response from the spectators in United Kingdom and New Delhi.
“As Punjab is the home ground for the game of kabaddi so we expect phenomenal response from the audience here. I hope the teams will showcase electrifying moments during the matches.”
The matches will be scheduled held on every Saturday and Sunday and the Punjab leg will feature 22 matches spread across four weekends.
