Six policemen were killed and three injured in an ambush laid by cadres of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) in Chhattisgarh's Bastar district on Friday.
“A party of policemen was attacked while it was returning on motorcycles from Netanar village,” said Assistant Director-General of Police Ram Niwas over the telephone.
According to Mr. Niwas, the ambush began with the Maoists detonating an improvised explosive device and opening fire on the group of 16 policemen travelling on eight motorcycles.
On Thursday night, suspected Maoists attacked a forest guesthouse in Netanar, a village about 30 km from the district headquarters at Jagdalpur.
A police spokesperson said a large police contingent visited Netanar to assess the damage.
“The party was split into two groups during their return. The smaller group was attacked,” said Mr. Niwas.
