October 05, 2011 01:32 am | Updated 01:32 am IST - KOLKATA:

A sub-adult female elephant was knocked down and killed by a train between Gulma and Sevoke in the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary area in Darjeeling district of north Bengal late on Monday night.

Died on the spot

“The elephant, which was in a herd of about 35, was dragged for nearly 100 metres by the engine and died on the spot,” Kanchan Banerjee, range warden, squad I, Sukna, told The Hindu over telephone on Tuesday. Wildlife officials and personnel, who rushed to the spot, burst crackers to drive away the herd, after which they removed the carcass and cleared the track around 1.30 a.m.
