Demanding the CBI probe into the suicides of two senior government officials and the murder of Corporation’s junior engineer, members of All India Rahul Gandhi Blood Donors’ Club and Congress cadres observed a fast at Jawahar Grounds in Palayamkottai on Monday.

The protestors, led by A. Brammanayagam alias Bramma, said “honest” officials were being allegedly forced to cooperate with “corrupt ministers” and those who were refusing to join hands with them were being threatened.

“While tahsildar Thiyagarajan and Executive Engineer of Agricultural Engineering Department S. Muthukumarasamy committed suicide, junior engineer of Tirunelveli Corporation Rajendran was found murdered under mysterious circumstances in a jungle near Courtallam. As the CB-CID police “failed” to make any headway in the murder of Ramajayam in Tiruchi, these three cases should be handed over to the CBI to bring out the truth,” Mr. Bramma said.

Congress office-bearers including State general secretary of Youth Congress T. Kamaraj participated in the fast.

Pressing this demand, the Congress cadres, led by former Union Minister R. Danushkodi Athithan, staged a demonstration at Jawahar Grounds in the evening. The protestors also condemned the Centre’s move to pass the “controversial” Land Bill and the “spying” of Rahul Gandhi’s residence.

The aftermath of a suicide

S. Muthukumarasamy, an Executive Engineer in the Department of Agricultural Engineering, ended his life in February. It was alleged that Muthukumarasamy took the extreme step as he was under tremendous pressure to favour an “influential” person in the matter relating to the recruitment of drivers in the department.
