An 18-year-old woman was murdered in Nirpuda village in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district on Sunday, allegedly by her husband and brother to preserve “family honour.” Kapil, said to be her lover, was also attacked. He, however, survived after the assailants fled presuming he was dead.

“Both Dharmendra [husband] and Nitin [brother] have been arrested and sent to jail. We are investigating the case,” Superintendent of Police J.K. Shahi told The Hindu on Monday.

Puja and Kapil, both belonging to the same caste, were allegedly in a relationship for several years. Puja was forcibly married off to Dharmendra of Badrakha village recently.

She returned to her parents’ house a few days ago.

Puja’s husband and brother were infuriated when they learnt she was at Kapil’s house. In a frenzy, the duo murdered Puja and assaulted Kapil. Presuming that Kapil had died in the attack, they fled the place.

Villagers, who reached the spot, found Kapil alive and rushed him to the hospital. His condition is reported to be stable.
