Two militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces on Sunday afternoon in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, around 40 km away from Srinagar.
An Army spokesman said two foreign militants of Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) were killed in a surgical operation in Tral area of Awantipura.
“One Army soldier was injured during the operation,” he added.
The soldier sustained a gunshot wound and was immediately evacuated. “His condition is reported to be stable,” said the spokesman.
The spokesman said there was specific intelligence about the presence of some militants in Pulwama district’s Kaigam village.
“A joint operation was launched by the Army and police on Sunday afternoon. As the cordon was being tightened around the suspected area where the terrorists were hiding, the terrorists opened a heavy volume of indiscriminate fire following which an intense exchange of fire ensued,” he said.
The encounter lasted till 6 pm. The two militants were identified as Adil Pathan and Burmee.
“The operation has also led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles and other war-like stores from the slain terrorists,” said the spokesman.
