Two wild tuskers from a migratory group of elephants were electrocuted for pulling down an electric pole near Suheli in Majhgain range of Nighasan in Lakhimpur, officials said on Friday.
The tuskers came in contact with live power supply cables on Thursday after they pulled down the electric pole which led to their death, Range officer Nighasan A.K. Singh said.
The incident took place in the area which is in close proximity of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR), he added.
The local residents, who came to know of the tragic accident informed the DTR, north Kheri and power department authorities about it, they said.
Power supply was snapped after the accident, they said.
Group of wild elephants regularly migrate into the reserve from adjoining Nepal forests and stay here owing to plenty of food, shelter and accommodating environment in the DTR, they said.
These migratory tuskers often sneak into populated areas of Nighasan, Majhgain, Belrayan and Tikonia and destroy standing crops and human habitations, which result in resentment among the local people, the officials added.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident a rogue elephant damaged trees also hitting two animals on Thursday in Ristal Pur village here was brought in control with the use of a tranquiliser given by the wild life department.
