A day after people belonging to the upper caste opened fire on Dalits over a land dispute in Mevasa village in Saurashtra, the police arrested two persons on Thursday. The dispute was over a piece of agricultural land in the village.

“We have arrested two persons involved in the firing that injured four persons from the Dalit community. We have filed a case of atrocity and launched an investigation,” a police officer from Khambhalia said.

A mob had gathered on an agricultural land where a few Dalits were working. Asking them to vacate the land, two armed men started firing, injuring four. They are being treated at a government hospital in Jamnagar.

The police officer indicated that more arrests were likely to be made in the case, as the complainant had mentioned several names in the FIR.
