October 05, 2015 01:37 am | Updated 01:37 am IST - Meerut:

The police have filed a case against Ritu Rathaur, allegedly the user of a Twitter handle @Riturathaur, for attempting to disturb communal harmony, by spreading sensational and controversial posts on social media.

Ms. Rathaur posted a picture of a sub-inspector’s body, alleging that he was mowed down by Muslims when a police official tried to stop a truck carrying beef in Saharanpur. But it turned out that the police personnel was killed not by people carrying beef in the truck. He lost his life when he tried to stop a truck carrying river stones.

An FIR has been registered in the Sadar Bazar police station under section 505 (1) C of the IPC

Ms. Rathaur, who has about 22,300 followers on Twitter, was accused of spreading ‘dangerous rumours’ on social media against which several Twitter users demanded action. Her post was allegedly well-circulated on WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook. Later the Saharanpur Superintendent of Police clarified that Ms. Rathaur’s allegations were baseless.
