Protect the interests of Indians in Qatar: Cong.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik has written to Union Minister of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj asking her to protect the interests of 6.5 lakh Indians, including about 10,000 Goans.

Mr. Naik’s email said that country is concerned about the plight on of Indians in Qatar and that “with the uncertain situation in Qatar, a large number of Goans and other Indians have began rushing to supermarkets and stores in Doha to stock up on essential of food supply.” Mr. Naik said that India has to use diplomatic channels with Qatar to protect the interests of the Indian population there. The government should use its good offices and resolve the crisis. He suggested that Ms. Swaraj brief the media more frequently about the situation in Qatar and ensure the Indian families there are protected. He urged the government monitor the crisis on a daily basis.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, UAE, Yemen, and Maldives have cut diplomatic ties and closed air and land routes with Qatar.
