One person was killed and five others were injured when a van skidded off the road on NH-15 in Assam’s Sonitpur district on Friday, a police officer said.

A van carrying vegetables skidded off NH-15 at Bihaguri Rangamati area under the Puthimari police outpost in the district seriously injuring six persons who were travelling in the vehicle, the officer said.

The injured were rushed to the Tezpur Medical College and Hospital where one of the critically injured succumbed to his injuries while the remaining were referred to Guwahati Medical College Hospital, the officer said.

Irate villagers of Bihaguri blocked the national highway for more than two hours alleging that the injured person, who was alive when taken to the hospital, succumbed to his injuries due to the negligence of the hospital authorities as there was no doctor in the emergency-casualty section in the morning, the officer said.

The villagers also damaged a part of the hospital before the police rushed to the area and brought the situation under control, the officer added.

The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Mantu Nath.
