Nine Srinagar youth to be prosecuted for unfurling IS flags

September 11, 2017 01:36 pm | Updated 01:36 pm IST - Srinagar:

The government is likely to prosecute nine Srinagar youth for raising Islamic State (IS) flag outside historic Jamia Masjid three years ago.

A order of the state Home Secretary said the investigating officer has established a prima-facie case against the accused persons under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

“…the state government is of the view that there is sufficient material and evidence available against the accused persons for their prosecution under the provisions of law,” it said.

A case was registered on October 17, 2014 against unknown people for unfurling the flag of IS in the premises of historic Jamia Masjid.

One of the accused, Sajad Ahmad Gilkar, was killed in an encounter this year in Budgam. All nine youth are from different parts of the old city in Srinagar.
