Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Wednesday made it clear that the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party would contest the Maharashtra Assembly elections also together in October. “This alliance will continue for the Assembly elections. There should be no doubt about that,” he told a press conference here. The two parties worked very cohesively during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. “We were facing a formidable challenge and worked very closely together. I think party workers could see the advantages of this.”
Criticising BJP leader Narendra Modi, Mr. Chavan said, “I have never seen such personal attacks being made by a prime ministerial candidate. It was a very negative and hollow campaign. He should have risen above this.”
What about the personal attacks made by Congress leaders? He said: “The Congress was retaliating for the BJP’s statements.”
He denied reports that Priyanka Gandhi overshadowed her brother, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, in the latter half of the campaign.
