The Maharashtra police has dismissed controversial encounter specialist Ravindra Angre from the force for allegedly trying to extort money from a builder. Mr Angre, who has gunned down over 50 criminals, was dismissed by an order issued by Maharashtra Director General of Police, Mr. Sanjiv Dayal on May 15.
According to sources in the Maharashtra police, Mr Dayal had ordered a departmental inquiry against Mr. Angre after a Thane-based builder complained that he had received extortion calls from the former encounter specialist. The inquiry conducted by an IPS officer found him guilty.
In 2008, Mr. Angre was arrested after a Thane based builder Mahesh Wagh filed an extortion case against him. However, a lower court acquitted him for want of evidence. In 2012, when he was reinstated and posted in the naxal belt of Gadchiroli in Maharashtra, he proceeded on leave and did not report to his new posting. Subsequently he was suspended and earlier this month dismissed from the force.
When contacted, Mr. Angre told The Hindu that he will challenge the dismissal order in the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal.
