A journalist’s mother and daughter were abducted and brutally murdered on the outskirts of Nagpur on Sunday. The police have arrested a 26-year-old man.
Ravikant Kamble, a journalist working for a web portal in Nagpur, had informed the police on Saturday night that his mother, Usha Kamble (52), and daughter Rashi (18 months old) were missing since Saturday evening from Pawanputra Nagar area of the city, where he lives with his family.
“My mother left home at 5.30 p.m. When we tried to contact her after an hour, her phone was switched off,” Mr.Kamble told The Hindu .
The police found the two bodies under a bridge on a stream near Bahadura, on the outskirts of the city, on Sunday morning.
Mr. Kamble, a crime reporter, said the murderer had slit his mother and daughter’s throats. “It does not appear to be a theft gone wrong or abduction for extortion. The gold ornaments they were wearing were found intact on the bodies,” Mr. Kamble said.
The Nagpur Police claimed to have cracked the case by evening. A statement issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) said Ganesh Sahu (26) had been arrested for the murders. “The accused had a big quarrel with Usha Kamble on Saturday evening over some monetary transactions, which is why he killed her and her granddaughter,” the statement said.
The Nagpur Union of Working journalists condemned the murders.
