Panic-struck tribals are fleeing their homes at Pusparampara, a sleepy tribal hamlet in Kanchanpur sub-division in North Tripura district after eight people, including four women, were gunned down by outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), official sources said on Thursday.
The killing took place on Tuesday and the villagers are taking shelter in neighbouring Anandabazar and Bhandarima villages.
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Minister for Food and Power Manik De accompanied by the Director General of Police Pranay Sahaya and Inspector General of BSF, S K Mishra visited the village on Wednesday and spoke to the inhabitants at Bhandarima.
Mr. Sarkar assured the villagers that a camp of Tripura State Rifles would be set up in the village and government jobs and compensation would be given to the next of kin of those killed, the sources said.
The NLFT had gunned down the eight people, all relatives of seven of its members in retaliation for surrendering to the authorities.
Police said a combing operation is on, but none has been apprehended yet.
