Large parts of the city were under water for several hours following heavy overnight rains that continued into Sunday.
Train services to and from the city were affected for a while and stretches of the car shed near the Howrah station were inundated.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the city received 89.5 mm rainfall over the past 24 hours till Sunday noon.
Heavy showers have been forecast for the next 48 hours in the Gangetic plains of the State as well as parts of north Bengal.
Low-lying areas of the city were waterlogged and traffic — though relatively sparse the day being a holiday — was thrown into disarray in the morning.
Mayor Sovon Chaterjee said all pumping stations of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation were operating to remove water from the water-logged areas.
There was heavy rainfall in some districts too. Certain parts of Howrah, Hooghly, South and North 24 Parganas districts were inundated for much of the day.
