Haryana Congress president Ashok Tanwar and Congress Legislature Party leader Kiran Choudhry staged a demonstration at the Mini-Secretariat here on Monday, holding the Haryana government responsible for the monster jams on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway last week.

Mr. Tanwar said hundreds of people, including women and children, were forced suffer and spend the entire night in their cars because of the massive jams, which could have been easily avoided had the government performed its duty. He said the various infrastructure projects initiated by the Congress government were still not complete. “The work on Dwarka Expressway was more than 90 per cent complete during our regime, but the BJP government has failed to complete the project leading to frequent jams on the National Highway-8,” said Mr. Tanwar.

He said all natural water channels and water bodies were encroached upon and there was no outlet left for rainwater. He said the problem of water-logging was also witnessed in other cities like Faridabad because of poor drainage system. He demanded action against those responsible for the “faulty planning”.

Taking the government to task, Ms. Choudhry said the BJP government had spent crores of rupees on “Happening Haryana” to attract investment, but the unprecedented traffic jam had presented a poor picture of the city in the eyes of the prospective investors.

“The industrialists must have seen on television what happened in Gurgaon a couple of days ago,” said Ms. Choudhry. She said that it was the job of the political masters to keep the administration on its toes, but they themselves were caught napping.

The two leaders submitted a memorandum to the Additional Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh on the issue.

The Congress workers also raised slogans against the Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
