Five Union ministers visit Manipur

Five union ministers are visiting Manipur in quick succession to oversee development projects being carried out in the state.

The Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industries Nirmala Sitharaman made a two day official visit on Monday and Tuesday. She expressed her displeasure that the officials at Moreh, the border town could not give her the amount of revenue collected from the export and import business and that construction of the multi-storeyed shopping mall was much behind the schedule.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju will visit Manipur on Friday and Saturday to review the law and order. They will hold talks with the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, top officials of police, army and paramilitary forces. The visit gathers special significance since there has been violent incidents recently in Manipur claiming lives.

On Thursday, Mr. Ibobi visited Ukhrul district to lay the foundation stone of the new district and sessions court building. But there was a 24 hour general strike in protest against the failure of the government to smoke out the rebels who have been making their presence felt in the district.

Ram Vilas Paswan, the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, will visit Manipur on Saturday to assess public distribution system in the state. There have been complaints that the PDS is almost non-existent in Manipur with the consumer items meant for distribution to the poor freely available on the market.

He will also talk with the officials on the construction of new godowns as Manipur cannot lift its full quota from the FCI godowns in Nagaland in view of the frequent landslips, blockades, breached bridges and other disruptions.

Social Welfare and Environment Minister Chand Ghelot will visit Manipur on Monday. There have been complaints of negligence from differently-abled persons in the state. During his two day visit, he will distribute wheel chairs, tricycles and hearing aids to 1000 persons.

The state unit BJP president Chaoba Thounaojam said that more ministers shall be visiting the state in the coming days to assess the developmental projects. He said that those who were found guilty of fund misuse and other lapses shall not escape punishment.
