Tripura government prepares an action plan to cope with growing incidents of crime against women in the State. All Women Police Station in districts, people-public interaction, awareness campaign and fast track courts are salient features of the endeavour of the Left Front government.
Meanwhile Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has emphasised that society can play an important role in protecting womenfolk from the crime menace.
“Laws are not the only way, but society must awake and raise voice against acts of crime against women”, he said at a seminar organised by the department of social welfare on Wednesday.
Mr. Sarkar also attended a conclave of women’s wing of ruling CPI(M) where he spoke on need of resistance in society over crime against women. He said parents should teach their offspring how to respect and protect women.
The National Crimes Records Bureau under the union home ministry has presented a dismal crime scenario against women in Tripura in its report complied on 2012. Dowry deaths, rape, molestations and abductions were highlighted in the report.
Opposition parties, human rights organisations and women groups have blamed low conviction rate and reluctance of police to prosecute the accused persons for the growth in crime against women. Even this year several incidents of gang rape and rape were reported, mainly from tribal areas.
The situation has essentially worried the Left Front government.
State secretary of CPI(M), Bijan Dhar, earlier assured of measures by the party and the government to check crime rate.
A state government official on Thursday informed an action plan has been made ready and it will be implemented soon. He said all women police station will come up in state’s eight districts in the next couple of months.
“The government would take opinion from citizens meetings to be held in the 1,300 localities in phases. Opinion and cooperation would be sought from the Tripura High Court to institute district wise first track court to try cases of atrocities on women”, the official stated.
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar advised recruitment of adequate number of women police officers as they would be required to manage women police stations.
