Her neighbours were angry that her brother-in-law was having an affair with a girl in the family
A Dalit woman was allegedly paraded naked on August 10 at Bhagwanpur village in Batala, over 250 km from here, by her neighbours, who were angry over her brother-in-law having an affair with a girl of their family.
Forced to flee
The victim, in her complaint to the police, said her neighbour Baldev Singh's daughter was having a relationship with her brother-in-law, Gagandep Singh. Unable to bear this, the girl's family members assaulted Gagandep on August 9 and threatened him with dire consequences. He left the village the same night.
The next day, the girl's relatives forcibly took her to their house where they tore her clothes and paraded her naked in the village.
The victim added that the police first refused to accept her complaint and were suggesting a settlement with the neighbour, as their family wielded considerable influence in the area.
The victim's husband and father-in-law work in Bathinda, while she along with her mother-in-law work as domestic helps.
She said she would take the matter to court as she had failed to get justice from the police.
Kulwant Kaur, mother-in-law of the victim said that on August 11, she along with her daughter-in-law again went to the police station, where the Station House Officer (SHO) accepted their complaint.
“It was the second time that he even accepted the complaint and three days have passed, but nothing has happened. The guilty are roaming around freely, threatening us publicly,” she said.
“On Friday night, two constables along with an ASI came to their house and demanded Rs. 500 from us as expenses for searching for the accused,” Ms. Kaur added.
SHO Rajesh Kakkar and SSP, Batala, D.P Singh did not comment on the incident.
