A team of BJP leaders on Thursday met the victims of the recent violence at Sandeshkhali in West Bengal.
Last month, several BJP workers were beaten up and shot at by miscreants allegedly supported by the Trinamool Congress when they were celebrating the party’s success in the Lok Sabha polls.
Residents intimidatedThe BJP team, including party leaders Siddharth Nath Singh, Meenakshi Lekhi, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, S.S. Ahluwalia and Babul Supriyo, alleged that the residents were intimidated. The police also filed counter cases against the injured and the traumatised, they said.
A report on the violence will be submitted to the Union Home Ministry next week.
“Violence was reported in West Bengal even before the polls began and Sandeshkhali was not the only place. The entire North 24 Parganas has seen violence, but there has been no action from the State government. Victims in Sandeshkhali told us that the police not only refused to register their complaints, but also filed FIRs against them in fake cases. Since a majority of the victims are Dalits, cases should been registered under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, which has still not been done,” said Mr. Singh.
