The BJP on Friday demanded a CBI probe into the suicide attempt by suspended Trinamool Congress MP and Saradha chit fund scam accused Kunal Ghosh in the Presidency Correction Home in Kolkata. The party wondered whether it was an attempt to commit suicide or "a political conspiracy to suppress evidence in the matter."

Seeking the inquiry, national secretary and in charge of West Bengal Siddharth Nath Singh said that under the process of law, a "safer custody" of Saradha scam’s prime witnesses should be ensured.

"Many had suspected political motive behind the arrest of Kunal Ghosh because he had started to expose involvement of senior TMC leaderships in the scam. He had also spoken about his life being in danger under [West] Bengal police custody. Few days ago he had threatened to commit suicide if certain TMC leaders [involved] were not [arrested]. What is alarming is that the Bengal police and the jail authorities allowed the incident to happen even after Kunal Ghosh had made his intentions clear," he said.

"Since Kunal Ghosh is a prime witness to the Saradha scam, Bengal police should have been more vigilant and monitored him 24X7. Therefore, the approach of the jail authorities raises further questions on whether it was a suicide attempt or political conspiracy to suppress evidence. Also, how did sleeping pills slip into his room?" asked Mr. Singh.
