Normal life was paralysed in the central Assam’s Nagaon and Morigaon districts on Monday due to a 24-hour bandh called by several organisations protesting against the proposed establishment of AIIMS at Changsari near Guwahati.

Shops closed

All shops and business establishments were closed and vehicles remained off the roads, the police said. Government offices were opened but attendance was thin.

The National Highway-37 was blocked by the protestors at Raha, Phulaguri and Kathiatoli. Several protesters were taken into preventive custody at Raha.

The bandh was called by the local units of All-Assam Students’ Union, All-Tiwa Students’ Union, Asom Jatiya Yuva Chatra Parishad and Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti since 5 a.m. today.

These organisations are protesting against the Assam government’s decision to establish the All-India Institute of Medical Science at Changsari and demanded that it be set up at Raha in central Assam. - PTI
