The realignment of flyovers to come up on Usman Road and Arcot Road will be finalised by Chennai Corporation shortly, a senior civic body official said on Monday.
The Corporation will begin the tendering process for the two flyovers in December.
A meeting to review the final feasibility study of the flyover on Arcot Road will be organised on Saturday. Decisions pertaining to its alignment will be made at the meeting based on the suggestions made at the stakeholders’ meeting held a few months ago.
The final alignment of the other flyover, proposed between Mahalingapuram and Anna Salai to ease traffic congestion in T. Nagar, will also be decided shortly. The construction of the structure will involve the redesign of the North Usman Road and South Usman Road flyovers.
The two flyovers — one at the junction of North Usman Road-Kodambakkam High Road costing Rs. 9.72 crore and the other at the Usman Road-Duraisamy Road junction costing Rs. 19.8 crore — were constructed during the DMK regime to help reduce traffic congestion. The realigned flyover on Usman Road is expected to further reduce congestion.
The flyover on Arcot Road, based on suggestions made by residents, has been proposed between Vadapalani bus stop and Megamart. “The consultant has completed traffic study at all the junctions between Vadapalani bus stop and Megamart. A decision on the flyover with this alignment is expected to be made shortly,” said another Corporation official.
The flyover at Arcot Road-K.K. Nagar 80 Feet Road junction was initially designed to extend over a stretch of 1.3 km, crossing just three junctions of Arunachalam Road, 80 feet road and Reddy Street. The passenger car units at the junction were estimated to be around 8,900 per hour. The proposal was to design a facility to handle 60 percent of the traffic in the area.
Most of the participants at the public consultation held a few months ago stressed the need for extending the flyover to the Big Bazaar junction, covering two more junctions. The length of the revised flyover was calculated to be 2.6 km. Structures including a hospital near Vadapalani bus stop will have to be demolished for the realigned flyover.
