Peasants’ organisation Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) observed a dawn-to-dusk bandh in Boudh district of Odisha on Tuesday to protest against alleged government apathy towards problems of farmers of the district.
The bandh affected normal life in the district. The bandh was called for early disbursement of compensation to farmers for drought-like situation in the district. The protestors added that the report provided to the government by the Boudh district administration had reduced the extent of crop loss. They wanted the crop loss report to be revised and corrected so that more needy farmers would get compensation. They added thatdrought compensation be disbursed by the end of this month. Vehicular traffic was drastically affected throughout the district due to the bandh. No passenger vehicles travelled inside the district and none of them plied between Boudh and other areas of the State. In most areas of the district, including the Boudh town, shops and business establishments remained closed. Members of the BKS picketed at several places and burnt tyres. Ambulance, health services, fire brigade, water supply and milk supply services in the district were spared from the shutdown.
