Eminent writer, social worker and former Congress leader Annada Prasad Ray passed away on Tuesday afternoon while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital here.

He was 79 and is survived by a son and a daughter. His wife, an eminent oncologist Bhaktilata Ray, had predeceased him in May 2013.

Family sources said Ray survived a cardiac stroke on Sunday and was rushed to the Hospital, where he breathed his last around 2 pm on Tuesday.

People from all walks of life rushed to his Purighat residence to pay their last respects to one of the highly-respected personalities of the city.

Ray, who served as the president of the famed literary organisation Utkal Sahitya Samaj, was honoured by the organisation on the day when its office bearers laid a flag of it on his body.

The last rites would be held at Khan Nagar crematorium on Wednesday, family sources informed.
