Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki will have to wait for her first major title after losing to Daniela Hantuchova 6-1, 6-3 on Friday in the third round of the French Open.

The Dane has been No. 1 in the WTA rankings for almost the entire season but never really challenged her Slovak opponent on Court Suzanne Lenglen, having her serve broken five times.

This is the first time in the Open era that the top two seeded women failed to make the round of 16 at a Grand Slam tournament. No. 2 Kim Clijsters lost on Thursday.

Federer breezes through

Roger Federer defeated Janko Tipsarevic 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the fourth round of the French Open on Friday.

The third-seeded Federer reached this stage of the clay-court Grand Slam tournament for the seventh straight year. He won the title in 2009 and was knocked out in the quarterfinals last year.

The Swiss great had 37 winners and saved the only break point he faced before closing out the match when his 29th-seeded opponent sent an easy volley long.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion has not dropped a set at the French Open this year. He will next take on either Swiss Davis Cup teammate Stanislas Wawrinka or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France.

Schiavone through

Women's holder Francesca Schiavone copped a break when ailing Chinese opponent Peng Shuai quit at mid-match to hand the Italian a 6-3, 1-2 win into the fourth round.

But 2010 finalist Samantha Stosur was knocked out in the third round by Argentine Gisela Dulko 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

Peng, ranked 25th,was unable to go on after being seen on court by a doctor and having her blood pressure taken. The fifth-seeded Schivone next plays the winner from tenth seed Jelena Jankovic and American Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Stosur was unable to get a grip against Dulko, whom she had beaten in both of their previous meetings including Madrid this month on clay.

The Australian committed 25 unforced errors and lost serve five times in her two-hour defeat.

Ferrer advances

Men’s seventh seed David Ferrer of Spain raced past Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in 96 minutes with 22 winners and nine unforced errors.
