Sportstar Aces awards — The jury

Sportstar Aces Awards will celebrate the stars, the future stars and the tireless silent partners who have dedicated their lives to sports, to realise the dream of making India a ‘Sporting Nation’.

The Popular Awards, which were put to vote on our website, and other awards will be presented to an elite panel of jury comprising Sunil Gavaskar, M.M. Somaya, Anju Bobby George, Anjali Bhagwat and N. Ram to make the final choice.

A short profile of the jury members

Sunil Gavaskar: The former India captain and cricketing legend, whose punditry is looked forward to by the faithful, also plays badminton and follows most other sports that come under the ambit of the multi-discipline Olympic arena and appeals to a vast majority of the Indian populace.

M.M. Somaya: A member of the Olympic gold-medal winning hockey team in Moscow (1980) and skipper of the Indian team at Seoul (1988), he also took part in two World Cups, two Asian Games and three Champions Trophies among other major tournaments.

Anjali Bhagwat: An expert in the 10m Air Rifle and Rifle 3 Position shooting events, she has won a mind-boggling 31 gold medals, 23 silver medals and seven bronze medals in various international meets such as the SAF Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Championships, Asian Games and World Cups.

Anju Bobby George: The country’s greatest long jumper, she is the only Indian to have won a senior World Championships medal in athletics, a bronze at the 2003 Paris event. She also won the gold at the 2005 IAAF World Athletics Finals.

N. Ram: The Chairman of the The Hindu Group Publishing, and a former Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of The Hindu Group of publications, Ram is a respected political journalist. A keen follower of sports, he played one First Class match for Madras as its wicketkeeper in the Ranji Trophy. He has also reported on Test matches for The Hindu briefly in the 1970s .
