Real, Atletico draw 1-1 in Madrid derby

Real Madrid missed a chance to go to the top of Spain’s La Liga as Luciano Vietto scored a late equaliser for Atletico Madrid in Atletico’s Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Vietto pounced on an error by Real Madrid goalkeeper Keymor Navas, who failed to gather a cross from Atletico substitute Jackson Martinez with seven minutes left on the clock on Sunday, reports Xinhua.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring after nine minutes with a header, but Atletico should have been level just 10 minutes later after they were awarded a penalty. Navas saved Antoine Griezmann’s spot kick, which was hit towards a corner, but at a saveable height.

Villarreal remain top despite suffering a surprise defeat to Levante after playing for 55 minutes after their defender Bojan Jokic was sent off for two yellow cards.

Villarreal almost held on for a point, but finally succumbed to a volleyed goal from Deyverson Silva seven minutes from the end to lose 0-1.

Aritz Aduriz led Athletic Club Bilbao’s excellent fightback as the Basque side came back from conceding a goal to a Dani Parejo free kick to produce a convincing 3-1 win at home to Valencia.

Aymeric Laporte equalised 10 minutes before halftime before Aduriz set up Markel Susaeta to put Athletic ahead 10 minutes after the break and then confirmed the win himself after great work from Raul Garcia.

Goals from Ruben Castro and Heiko Westermann gave Betis their second away win in a week as they completed a smash and grab raid away to a Rayo Vallecano side that created and missed enough chances to have taken something from the match.
