Vijayawada will host World Cup kabaddi championship for men from March 25 to 31 next year, according to organising Secretary K. P. Rao.
Sixteen teams — Japan, Iran, Korea, Great Britain, USA, Canada, Italy, Afghanistan, West Indies, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and Nepal — will be vying for top honours in the event with a total prize money of Rs. 1 crore.
There will be special incentives for best performing teams and players, where ‘Player-of-the-Tournament’ will get Rs. 2 lakh.
Incidentally, Vijayawada successfully hosted the inaugural Kabaddi Premier League last year besides hosting the Senior Nationals three times.
The championship will be played on league-cum-knockout format with the teams split into four groups and the topper qualifying for the semifinals.
