The Union Cabinet has approved a policy to give promotions to sportspersons for excellence in international events.
In a meeting held on Thursday evening, it was decided to give a maximum of three ‘out-of-turn’ promotions in a service career for a person winning medals in the Olympics, world championships, Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.
A sportsperson winning one or more medals in a year will be eligible for an out-of-turn promotion that year.
Moreover, record-breaking medal-winning performances in the National Games will also be considered for one such promotion during a career.
For coaches whose wards go on to win international medals, there will be a maximum of two promotions. This promotion scheme will be in addition to the cash awards already in practice.
The scheme will be framed by the Department of Personnel and Training. The proposed policy will cover all sportspersons working with the Central government.
