No IOA observers for AIBA-monitored elections

Published - September 10, 2014 11:46 pm IST - MUMBAI:

World boxing governing body AIBA will monitor the elections to choose office-bearers for Boxing India on Thursday, via Cliodhna Guy, Legal Committee member, and Kishen Narsi, former Executive Council member.

These two AIBA-nominated observers, along with returning officer Justice (retd.) D.K. Deshmukh, will conduct the elections for the posts of secretary-general, treasurer, 10 vice-presidents and seven executive council members.

AIBA had communicated in writing to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) about nominating two observers to observe the election proceedings.

In response, the IOA statement says: “Since Boxing India is not an affiliate of Indian Olympic Association, therefore, under the circumstances, the IOA is not in a position to send its Observer for the said meeting.”

Boxing India will do the administrative work with respect to Thursday’s elections, in their capacity as the national federation granted provisional recognition by AIBA.

Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF), the earlier body overseeing boxing in India, was suspended by the world body earlier and removed from the list of affiliated national federations.

Sandeep Jajodia, representing Chhatisgarh Pradesh Amateur Boxing Association, is the only person in the fray for the post of president. Three candidates are contesting for the post of secretary-general and treasurer respectively.

The AIBA-nominated observers will submit a report about the election process to the world body, which will then decide the new office-bearers for Boxing India.
