He was one of the star performers who captured the imagination of the people and made shooting such a vibrant sport in the Commonwealth Games.
Gagan Narang was hopeful that “better sense would prevail” and that shooting would be retained in the CWG in Birmingham in 2022.
The Birmingham organisers have repeatedly ruled out shooting from their schedule, but the Indian government and the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) have been pursuing the subject with the hosts along with the support of the ISSF.
Boycott not fair
“A boycott of the CWG will not be fair on the other athletes. However, am sure that the NRAI, government and the ISSF are looking at all possible solutions to the situation,” said Gagan.
He also pointed out that the ISSF was even offering financial assistance to conduct shooting to ensure that the sport continued to be part of the CWG.
With three years to go for the Games, it looks like the last word on shooting has not been said yet, even though time is running out.
