India had an extremely successful day in the World youth women’s boxing championship on Tuesday as all of its five boxers in fray advanced to the quarterfinals.
Nitu (48kg), Jyoti Gulia (51kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (54kg), Shashi Chopra (57kg) and Ankushita Boro (64kg) won their respective bouts at the N.C. Bardoloi Indoor Stadium here.
Jyoti recorded a resounding 5-0 victory over Ukraine’s Anastasiia Lisinska. Unruffled by the Ukraine boxer’s early aggression, Jyoti avoided her taller opponent’s punches through excellent bobbing. The courageous Indian landed precise shots to tame Anastasiia, whose punches missed the target very often.
Shashi had a cakewalk against Chinese Taipei’s Wei-Yi Lin Li in a second round clash. The Indian’s left-right jabs left the Taipei boxer flustered and earned her three standing counts, including two in the first round.
Shashi took it easy after having a firm control over the contest and utilised the full duration to train herself for her next bout.
Egged on by the vociferous local supporters, Assam girl Ankushita Boro beat Cagla Aluc 5-0. The taller Ankushita used her long reach and good footwork as she used combinations to gain an advantage over southpaw Cagla.
“I am happy to have taken revenge over the Turkey boxer, who had defeated me in the Ahmet Comert tournament (title clash in Istanbul),” said Ankushita.
Nitu beat Bulgarian Emi-Mari Todorova 4-1. Nitu, who had beaten the same rival in the past, moved well to minimise the clinching tactics of the Bulgarian and delivered some solid punches to emerge as the winner.
A World junior champion in 2015, Sakshi had a tough time against Russian Indira Sudabaeva before the Haryana girl managed a 4-1 victory.
