Wicketkeeper-batsman R. Nilesh Subramanian batted through the day to make 193 for Jolly Rovers in the third round of the TNCA first-division cricket league.

The 18-year-old’s undefeated innings (258b, 23x4, 2x6) at the top and Anand Subramanian’s 148 (213b, 15x4, 4x6) at number three, his second successive hundred, helped Rovers end on 392 for four against TI Cycles. The pair put on 294 for the second wicket at Murugappa.

At SRMC (turf), V. Subramania Siva came to the middle at the fall of the first wicket and stayed unbeaten on 163 (262b, 18x4, 5x6), as Young Stars scored 265 for three against Vijay, the defending champion.

The theme of top-order batsmen making important runs was seen in two other matches. Opener X. Thalaivan Sargunam (118 batting) and one-drop B. Indrajith (109 batting) rescued Globe Trotters and UFCC (T. Nagar) respectively.

IOB off-spinner G.V.S. Prasad hindered Trotters with four wickets. Leg-spinner M. Ashwin (three wickets) was India Pistons’ most successful bowler against UFCC.

Alwarpet made the most progress on the first day, securing the first-innings lead against Indian Bank at IIT-Chemplast before stumps.

Balaji bags four

Seamer S.K. Balaji (four for 46) was supported by Garry Anthony Dumenil (three wickets), as Indian Bank was bowled out for 120. Alwarpet replied with 136 without loss (opener S. Karthik retired hurt on 37).

At RKM-Vivekananda, Grand Slam ground its way to 234 for five against Aruna, thanks to half-centuries from Vijay Shankar and V. Maaruthi Raghav.
