FC Goa has, arguably, been one of the most beautiful teams to watch. It is, however, unfortunate that it doesn’t have the results to show for in the five editions of the Indian Super League. Finalist in two editions (2015 & ‘18-19) and a semifinalist once (2017-18) has been the Gaurs’ record when it should have been much different.
This time, its coach Sergio Lobera has opted for continuity and has retained majority of players from the last edition. The 42-year-old Spaniard said the sixth edition will be very difficult, and implied that winning is the last thing on his mind.
“Honestly, I think it is very difficult to improve from last season. Because the context is very different this season. The opponent teams have fielded very good players. And for us the last season was very very good. I think it is going to very hard as the competition is equal,” said Lobera, at a media interaction here on Friday. “The most important thing is fans enjoy FC Goa play. This is the way to arrive at success.”
The Spaniard said his team signing only six (instead of mandatory seven) foreign players was a drawback. “The club decided to keep the players from last season. All the other teams play with seven while we will play with one less. [It is an] advantage for other teams.”
Lobera didn’t underestimate Chennaiyin FC (CFC), whom it will take on its first home match on October 23. “CFC has several new faces, and is a good defensive team. I think CFC can win the title,” he said.
