Veteran defender Carles Puyol will be out of action for around two weeks after tearing a muscle at the back of his left leg in a training session with the Spanish national team.
Puyol, 32, initially suffered the injury while warming up just before Barcelona’s 3-0 win away to Racing Santander on Sunday.
He was immediately sent back to Barcelona by the Spanish federation after the incident on Tuesday and will miss La Roja’s upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Liechtenstein and Argentina.
Spain manager Vicente del Bosque has called up Osasuna left-back Nacho Monreal to replace Puyol.
Another of Spain’s many Barcelona players with an injury problem is playmaker Xavi, who limped out of the Santander match at half-time with a strained left Achilles tendon.
Xavi will stay with the Spain squad but is doubtful for Friday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Liechtenstein in Vaduz.
