Aizawl FC defeated Hero I-League champion Bengaluru FC 2-1 in the opening match of the Federation Cup, held at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium here on Saturday.
Joel Sunday’s 90th minute goal proved to be the difference between the two sides locked at 1-1 for nearly the entire second-half.
The pressure is now on BFC to turn the tables in the second-leg, which is slated to be held at Bengaluru on May 3.
In the 15th minute, Eugeneson Lyngdoh’s shot from distance got past the Aizawl FC custodian, giving BFC a 1-0 lead.
Aizawl roared back when Lalchhawnkima’s assist found Alfred Kemah, whose left-footed strike made its way into the net.
Nigerian import Sunday then gave the home fans plenty to cheer about when he scored the winner in the final minute.
“We deserved this win,” Aizawl FC Head Coach Jahar Das said.
The result: Aizwal FC 2 (Alfred Kemah 38, Joel Sunday 90) bt BFC 1 (Eugeneson Lyngdoh 15).
