European Union officials will keep national leaders updated with the results of World Cup matches during the summit in Brussels on Thursday, summit host Herman Van Rompuy said.
EU leaders are holding their regular summer summit in the midst of the World Cup opening round. Greece and France are both set to play later on Thursday.
“As soon as I have the results, I will let you know,” Van Rompuy told EU leaders in a brief opening statement broadcast to journalists covering the summit.
Greece is set to play Nigeria at 1400 GMT, while France kicks off against Mexico at 1830 GMT.
The summit is scheduled to end before the Greek game begins, but EU summits have a tendency to run well beyond their official deadlines.
It is not the first time that sporting events have impinged on EU summits. In 2007, British premier Gordon Brown revealed at a summit in Lisbon that French President Nicolas Sarkozy had promised to support the “European” team in that year’s Rugby World Cup final.
The team in question was England, which had just inflicted a shock semifinal defeat on France. A large number of French fans were subsequently seen supporting South Africa at the final in Paris.
