Statistical highlights of the first Test match at Mohali

Day 1:

# Twelve wickets have been lost on the first day of the present Test. The only instance of losing more than 12 wickets (13) on the first day of Mohali Test is in the India-New Zealand Test in October 1999 - 10 by India (83) and 3 by New Zealand (119/3).

# Four times against South Africa since January 2000, India have been bowled out on the first day of a Test match - 76 at Ahmedabad, 2008; 158 at Bangalore, 2000; 201 at Mohali, 2015 and 225 at Mumbai, 2000. India had lost all three previous Tests vs South Africa.

# Dean Elgar (4/22) has registered a career-best bowling performance in Tests, eclipsing the 1 for three vs Pakistan at Dubai (DSC) in October 2013.

# Elgar's aforesaid figures are, in fact, his best in first-class cricket, obliterating the 4 for 25 for Knights vs Titans at Centurion in Sept/October 2011. These two instances are his only ones of four-wicket hauls in first-class cricket.

# Elgar's excellent figures are the third best by a South African left-arm spinner vs India in India - the top two being 6 for 55 by Paul Adams at Kanpur in 1996-97 and 5 for 83 by Nicky Boje at Bangalore in March 2000.

# Only Pakistan's Danish Kaneria had better figures as an overseas spinner in a Test innings at Mohali - 6 for 150 in March 2005.

# Murali Vijay (75) has registered his second fifty vs South Africa - his 12th in Tests. His highest score vs South Africa is 97 at Durban in December 2013.

# Vijay is averaging 50.44 in first team innings as compared to his second innings average of 31.20.

# For the first time in his career, Vijay has been dismissed lbw in four successive innings - vs Bangladesh at Fatullah in June 2015; both innings in the Colombo (PSS) Test and Mohali.

# Cheteshwar Pujara is averaging 72.77 (1310 runs in 22 innings) at home as against his average of 33.53 away from home (939 runs in 29 innings).

# Shikhar Dhawan's first duck vs South Africa is his third in Tests - his first two being vs New Zealand and Australia.

# Dhawan is averaging 15.20 vs South Africa in Tests - his tally being 76 in five innings with a highest of 29 at Durban in December 2013.

# Ravindra Jadeja (38) has registered his highest score vs South Africa, surpassing the 8 at Durban in December 2013.

# Jadeja has faced 92 balls during his aforesaid innings - the second longest by him. While scoring 31 against England at Nottingham in 2014, he had faced 98 balls.

# Wriddhiman Saha has recorded his first golden duck in Tests - his third duck overall - two vs South Africa and one vs Australia.

# Faf du Plessis' first duck vs India is his second in Tests - the first being vs West Indies at Centurion in December 2014.

# du Plessis is averaging below 50 for the first time in Tests (49.83).

Day 2

# Murali Vijay became the 35th Indian batsman to complete 1,000 runs in Tests in India - his aggregate being 1001 at an average of 52.68, including three centuries and three fifties.

# An Indian opening pair has not put on a stand of fifty in eight successive innings and they could amass just 44 runs at an average of 5.50 for India.

# AB de Villiers (63) has registered his third fifty vs India - his 37th in Tests.

# de Villiers' aforesaid innings is his second highest in India behind the 217 not out at Ahmedabad in April 2008.

# de Villiers is averaging 59.65 in Tests in Asia - his tally being 1551 in 30 innings, including three centuries and seven fifties.

# Shikhar Dhawan became the fifth Indian opening batsman to post a Pair in a Test match. The first four being Pankaj Roy, Farokh Engineer, Wasim Jaffer and Virender Sehwag.

# Ravindra Jadeja's Test bowling record in India is superb - his aggregate being 30 in six Tests at 19.70 runs apiece, including one instance of a five-wicket haul - 5 for 58 against Australia at Delhi in 2012-13.

# Cheteshwar Pujara has once again taken his batting average to fifty-plus in Tests - his tally being 2312 runs (ave.50.26) in 29 Tests, including seven centuries and seven fifties.

# His record against South Africa is superb, averaging 50.62 - his aggregate being 405 in five Tests including a century and two fifties.

# Ravichandran Ashwin (5/51) has recorded his first instance of five wickets in an innings vs South Africa - his 13th in Tests. At Johannesburg in December 2013, in his only previous Test against them, he had failed to take a wicket - his figures being 0/25 & 0/83.

# With 36 wickets at 21.47 runs apiece in six Tests this year, Ashwin is the leading Indian bowler in Tests this year. His aggregate includes four five-wicket hauls and one instance of ten wickets in a Test match.

# Ashwin is the only bowler to take five wickets in an innings four times this year. He has established a record for taking only 16 Tests to complete 100 wickets (ave.23.43) on Indian soil, surpassing Harbhajan Singh's record of reaching the milestone in 19 Tests.

# Ashwin has recorded 13 five-wicket hauls in Tests in the subcontinent - his aggregate being 126 (ave.22.36) in 20 Tests. Waqar Younis is the only other bowler to bag 13 five-wicket hauls in his first 20 Tests in Asia.

# Ashwin, appearing in his 29th Test, has completed his 150 wickets in Tests at an average of 27.84. He is the quickest Indian to 150 wickets in Tests, surpassing the feats of Erapalli Prasanna and Anil Kumble, who had taken 34 Tests each.

# Ashwin is the joint second-fastest spinner to 150 Test wickets. Clarrie Grimmet had taken 28 Tests to accomplish the distinction. South Africa's off spinner Hugh Tayfield and Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal had taken 29 Tests.

# South Africa's 184 is their third lowest total against India in India in Tests. Their two lowest scores were 176 at Mumbai in February 2000 and 177 at Kanpur in December 1996.

# The three Indian spinners have bagged all ten wickets at 14.10 runs apiece - the best ever average by Indian spinners when they took all ten wickets in the first innings, surpassing the 15.20 in the Bangalore Test vs England (195) in 1976-77.
